Why I prefer older Pullip sculpts.

I haven't fallen in love with a new Pullip in literal years! However recently it happened.

My Melody! But my main issue so far is.. can I accept the new Pullip sculpt? Let me demonstrate the difference.

I don't recall exactly when Pullips changed to this new neck hole position (around 2008 I think, there is also an in-between these 2 sculpts but I don't have a photo of that!)

Here you can see Pullip Panda (2004) vs a MIO kit (2020)
The neck hole location is much different. For the new Pullip sculpt the neck hole is further forward into the chin, whereas the old sculpt has it mainly in the middle, between the 2 face plates.

Why does it bother me? Well the new neck hole position which was being used from 2008/2009 or so really changes Pullip's range of expression. I get the feeling they wanted her to look more like Blythe, with her chin permanently tucked in (she would have a double chin! haha)

Here are some more comparisons~

My remake of Pullip Serenity ~ you can see her head is turned but her chin is still close to her neck

My Cream, Moch & Puff personal collection, they're all older dolls. Observe the distance of the chin vs. the neck positions~

What do you think? Should I get the new My Melody for my personal collection?

  1. I have never thought about that before, tbh. To me, with new hole position, the doll looks more relaxed. With old they look a bit like they are trying to pull their chin more front (they look like fashion models). I like it both ways but prefer the new one. My Melody looks cute! Her dark eyes are nice contrast with her pastel look.

    1. Oh thanks for putting it that way! I do feel the new position can be cute but seems more limited in terms of expression perhaps? I am still already about 95% there when it comes to buying the new MM though! I agree her dark eyes and pastel look just match so perfectly ;_;

  2. That's a complicated questions. I would have thought it was for balancing purposes, but I know almost nothing about pullips/blythes to know if it was an aesthetic goal only. I think you can always get her (if budget allows), then resell her quickly if it is a nogo for you?

    1. I found the new neck position gives her less balance than before actually, my guess was always that they did it to make Pullip resemble Blythe more :O
But I did get her! And I adore her!!!

  3. The new hole position made me think about balance. As long as the new hole position does not make the doll's balance any different, well then I do not complain. It looks okay and works when it comes to photos.
My Melody looks just so adorable. There is always a place for a My Melody based cutie!

    1. Unfortunately while trying to bodyswap her I found this head has more balancing issues than the old one ;_; ~ but I did get her and she's an absolute cutie!!

  4. I love your work on Pullips. I can't say I know too much about the old vs new Pullips. I stopped collecting them a long time ago due to space restrictions here. I only have 5 Pullips and they all fit in their own little cabinet - cannot fit anymore in there. I should take photos of them more often though. I bought custom outfits for them. Their lack of posing ability is a detriment to photo taking though.

I think if you like Melody, then get her if you can put up with the new changes.

    1. Thanks Alasse :) most people replace pullip bodies with azone/obitsu for this reason! You could give it a go~ I got my melody and gave her a new obitsu 26 body ~
